Qualcomm has announced the acquisition of the generative AI division of VinAI, a leading AI research company based in Hanoi, in a deal with undisclosed terms, as revealed by the companies on Monday through a joint statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This strategic move signifies Qualcomm’s persistent expansion into the AI tooling sector, underscoring its commitment to advancements in artificial intelligence. VinAI, founded by Hung Bui, a former research scientist at DeepMind, specializes in the development of various generative AI technologies, including advanced computer vision algorithms and sophisticated language models.<\/p>\n

According to Qualcomm SVP of Engineering, Jilei Hou, “The acquisition underscores our dedication to investing in R&D, positioning us at the forefront of the next wave of AI innovation. By integrating the talented team from VinAI, we are enhancing our capability to deliver state-of-the-art AI solutions that will benefit a broad spectrum of industries and consumers.”<\/p>\n

VinAI, established by Bui in 2019, primarily focuses on the development of AI-powered automotive products but also engages in higher-level AI research. Backed by VinGroup, a prominent Vietnamese conglomerate, the company creates innovative solutions such as in-cabin monitoring systems, security solutions, and intelligent parking systems for both car manufacturers and clients across other sectors.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Forbes in 2023<\/a>, Bui disclosed that VinAI had a workforce of approximately 200 employees distributed across its offices in Hanoi, the United States, and Australia.<\/p>\n

Bui expressed his expectation that VinAI’s expertise will contribute significantly to several of Qualcomm’s product lines, including software and chips designed for smartphones, personal computers, and vehicles. He further added, “The expertise of our team in generative AI and machine learning will accelerate the development of groundbreaking solutions capable of transforming the way we live and work.”<\/p>\n

Following the completion of the acquisition, Bui, who currently serves as VinAI’s CEO, is set to join Qualcomm, as indicated in the press release.<\/p>\n

This acquisition of VinAI marks Qualcomm’s second major purchase this year, subsequent to its acquisition of Edge Impulse, a German company specializing in AI and Internet of Things technologies, in early March. Recently, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon described<\/a> edge AI, which enables AI operations on devices without relying on data center infrastructure, as a significant “tailwind” for the tech giant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
