{"id":12031,"date":"2025-03-27T08:34:44","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T08:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fusionmindlabs.com\/blogs\/nhs-vendor-to-pay-3m-fine-after-ransomware-attack\/"},"modified":"2025-03-27T08:34:44","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T08:34:44","slug":"nhs-vendor-to-pay-3m-fine-after-ransomware-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fusionmindlabs.com\/blogs\/nhs-vendor-to-pay-3m-fine-after-ransomware-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS vendor to pay \u00a33M fine after ransomware attack"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK&#8217;s data protection regulator has confirmed that NHS vendor Advanced will be required to pay a fine of just over \u00a33 million ($3.8 million) for failing to implement basic security measures prior to a ransomware attack in 2022. <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/about-the-ico\/media-centre\/news-and-blogs\/2025\/03\/software-provider-fined-3m-following-2022-ransomware-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">This decision was made by<\/a> the Information Commissioner&#8217;s Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This fine is half of the initial amount that the Information Commissioner&#8217;s Office had <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/08\/06\/uk-data-watchdog-fines-nhs-vendor-advanced-for-security-failures-prior-to-lockbit-ransomware-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">originally intended to impose<\/a> in August 2024, which was more than \u00a36 million due to Advanced&#8217;s security shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the ICO, Advanced violated data protection laws by not fully implementing multi-factor authentication before the breach occurred, allowing hackers to use stolen credentials to gain access and steal personal information of tens of thousands of individuals across the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LockBit ransomware attack on Advanced resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/10\/13\/advanced-nhs-patient-data-ransomware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">extensive disruptions to NHS services<\/a>, including patient data systems maintained by Advanced on behalf of the NHS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advanced has issued a statement confirming that the matter has been settled.
