According to a statement provided to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/634442\/google-maps-timeline-data-deleted-cloud-backup-recovery\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Verge;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>The Verge<\/em><\/a>, Google spokesperson Genevieve Park stated, \u201cWe briefly experienced a technical issue that caused the deletion of Timeline data for some people.\u201d Users who had backups enabled will be the only ones able to restore their Timelines, as indicated by the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Google has recently shifted to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/google-maps-will-let-you-store-your-location-on-your-phone-instead-the-cloud-170041432.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:switched to on-device storage for Timeline;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on-device storage for Timeline data<\/a>, and it appears that backups are not enabled by default. To activate them, users must navigate to Your Timeline in the Maps app and adjust the settings from the cloud icon. This incident resulted in the loss of years&#8217; worth of location history for some users.
