As the season finale of Severance approaches, the show’s dedicated fan base, including the team here at io9, has developed numerous theories about the series’ various enigmas. Despite the multitude of mysteries surrounding Cold Harbor, the Mark/Mark S./Helly/Gemma drama, and the cryptic purpose of the goats, certain aspects of the narrative have been clarified in the penultimate episode of season two, “The After Hours.” However, it is essential to remember that in the world of Severance, nothing is ever truly resolved.

For those who may not be up to date, be aware that the following discussion will contain spoilers for “The After Hours.”

One of the most poignant moments in the episode occurred when Irving (John Turturro) departed Kier by train, accompanied by his dog Radar, and left behind his life at Lumon. His escape was facilitated by Burt (Christopher Walken), with whom he had developed a romantic connection as their “innie” personas, and later as their “outie” selves. This complicated situation was further entangled by Burt’s long-term relationship with his husband and his ongoing involvement with Lumon in a more sinister capacity than his “innie” role as the head of Optics and Design.

Just when it seemed that Burt was leading Irving (and Radar) towards a fate reminiscent of The Sopranos, he instead purchased Irving a train ticket and gently warned him never to return. The two men shared a heartfelt farewell, acknowledging their mutual feelings before setting them aside.

With Irving effectively in exile, fans have speculated about whether this Marks the last appearance of the character. This would be a significant loss for Severance, as Irving often served as the show’s emotional core and was unafraid to challenge the status quo, particularly in a company like Lumon that is full of deception.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Turturro expressed that he would not be satisfied if the train scene marked the end of Irving’s story. “If someone wanted the story to be complete, it could be,” he said, “but I believe there’s much more to explore.” He also noted that there is a significant aspect of Irving’s backstory that he would like to delve into further.

“Irving is aware of many things that the audience is not,” Turturro explained. “There’s a substantial reason behind his paintings and his search. Everyone on the show has undergone severance for different reasons – grief, being lost, or being the daughter of the owner. Perhaps it’s also about searching for someone.”

With only one episode remaining in season two of Severance, and although Apple TV+ has yet to confirm a third season, it seems likely at this point. The return of Irving is less certain, but Turturro’s comments have provided renewed hope that we may learn more about the character in the future.
